What Is Emotional Transformation Therapy & Can It Help With ADHD?

You’ve heard it from teachers for years. Bright kid. Capable kid. Just needs to apply himself.

You’ve heard it about yourself, too, if you’re the adult in this story. You know what you’re supposed to do. You’ve made the lists. You’ve downloaded the apps. And the gap between knowing and doing hasn’t closed.

Here’s the reality. ADHD is not a discipline problem, a character flaw, or a shortage of effort. It affects focus, yes. It also affects how someone starts a task, finishes it, remembers it, and recovers when it goes sideways. That last part is the one families rarely get help with.

About one in nine American kids ages 3 to 17 has been diagnosed with ADHD at some point, and roughly three in ten of those kids received no medication and no behavioral treatment at all. That’s a lot of families sitting in the gap between a diagnosis and a plan.

If you’re in that gap, one of the approaches we offer at New Vision Counseling and Consulting is Emotional Transformation Therapy, or ETT. It’s a non-pharmaceutical approach that pairs regular psychotherapy with specific forms of visual stimulation. We’re not going to promise you it cures ADHD, and you should be skeptical of anyone who does. What we can do is tell you plainly what it is, what it isn’t, and how to figure out whether it’s worth a conversation.

If ADHD is making everyday life harder for you or your child, call us at (405) 921-7776 or visit NewVisionCounseling.org to schedule an appointment.

What Is Emotional Transformation Therapy?

ETT is a form of psychotherapy developed by psychologist Dr. Steven Vazquez that combines a working therapeutic relationship with visual brain stimulation. In practice that can mean specific wavelengths of light, saturated color, visual targets, and guided eye movements, used while the client is actively working through what brought them in.

The part people get wrong: ETT is not sitting in front of a light. The visual piece happens inside a session with a trained clinician while you or your child are talking through the thoughts, emotions, and physical responses tied to the problem. The light is a tool in the room. The therapy is still therapy.

At New Vision, ETT sits alongside the other approaches our team is trained in, including cognitive behavioral therapy and EMDR. Which one we reach for depends on the person in front of us, not just the diagnosis the client has been given.

How Might ETT Help Someone With ADHD?

Ask most people what ADHD is and you’ll hear attention and hyperactivity. Ask a parent who lives with it and you’ll hear something different: the meltdown over a math worksheet. The slammed door. The kid who cannot get started, then cannot stop, then cannot come back down.

That’s the emotional side of ADHD, and it’s more common than most families realize. Research reviewed by the American Psychological Association puts significant emotional dysregulation in roughly 25% to 45% of children with ADHD and 30% to 70% of adults with it. These are not two separate problems. For a lot of people, they’re the same problem wearing different clothes.

Here’s what that looks like day to day:

  • Getting overwhelmed or frustrated fast, over something small
  • Locking onto one thing and being unable to shift off it
  • Knowing exactly what needs to be done and still not being able to start
  • Reacting on impulse in the moments that matter most
  • Taking a long time to come down after getting upset
  • Losing confidence after enough years of falling short at school or work
  • Constant low-grade stress around deadlines, organization, and other people’s expectations

ETT works on that emotional and physiological layer. The theory is that pairing visual stimulation with active emotional processing gives the nervous system another route to settle, which can make the rest of the day more workable.

That’s the honest frame: one possible tool inside a bigger plan, aimed at the part of ADHD that makes everything else harder. The goal is not to make your kid a different kid. It’s to take some of the friction out of being the kid they already are.

What Happens at a First ETT Appointment for ADHD?

Assessment comes before treatment. Always.

Two people can carry the same ADHD diagnosis and be struggling with completely different things. One can’t sustain focus. Another is fine at school and falls apart at home. A third has anxiety underneath the whole thing and nobody has looked at it yet.

At a first appointment, expect a conversation about:

  • Current symptoms and when they show up
  • What’s happening at school or at work specifically
  • Emotional regulation, including the blowups and the shutdowns
  • Family and relationship patterns
  • Previous therapy or ADHD treatment and what came of it
  • Medication history
  • What you actually want to be different in six months
  • Other concerns that may be feeding the symptoms, including anxiety

That conversation is what tells us whether ETT is the right direction or whether something else fits better. We’d rather tell you no than sell you a protocol.

The ADHD Assessment: Your Own Report Card

The ETT ADHD assessment only takes one counseling session to complete.

Here’s the reality — you don’t have to take my word for how effective this is. You are the report card.

After the assessment, if you notice sharper focus, less anxiety, and a calmer ability to sustain your attention, that’s real change. And it’s yours.

How we decide what’s next:

We look at how much change you experienced and how long it lasted.

  • If that change holds for twenty-four hours up to about two weeks, we typically recommend moving into the full ADHD protocol.
  • If it doesn’t last that long, we typically don’t recommend it.

But this is always your choice. Even if we don’t recommend it, you can still move forward if that’s what you want. You are always in the driver’s seat.

If we do move into the protocol, here’s what it looks like:

  • One session daily, Monday through Friday, for three weeks
  • Follow-up sessions as needed after that

The work doesn’t stop when the protocol ends. What starts in that assessment gets built on in counseling, session by session, until it holds.

If nothing changes, nothing changes. This assessment gives you a real look at what change feels like — and the next move is yours.

How Is ETT Different From EMDR?

They get compared constantly because both involve the eyes. They’re different approaches.

EMDR is best known for helping people process traumatic or distressing experiences, and its signature component is bilateral stimulation, often guided eye movements. It has been standardized and studied extensively, particularly for PTSD. It is a fantastic treatment option and some of our therapists are trained in it as it can be highly effective.

ETT uses several forms of visual stimulation rather than one. Depending on the technique, that can include eye movements, saturated color targets, specific wavelengths of light, or peripheral visual stimulation, individualized as treatment goes.

Worth saying clearly: no scientific study we have seen has directly compared the two. ETT’s own developer says so. Comparisons between them come from clinicians and clients reporting their own experience, which is useful information and is not the same thing as evidence.

So if you’ve done EMDR before, don’t assume ETT will feel like it. And if EMDR helped you, that doesn’t mean you need to switch.

What Does a Full Course of ETT Treatment Involve?

ETT isn’t a one-session fix.

It’s built as a sequence of sessions so the clinician can watch how you or your child respond, find what needs attention, and adjust the techniques along the way.

For families, knowing the time commitment up front matters more than almost anything else we discuss. Kids and teens are already juggling school, activities, and appointments, and a plan that collapses in week two helps nobody. Using ETT is like any other treatment in that each person will have a different path based upon their needs. For kids, they need to be able to sit long enough to engage in the different modalities we offer for ETT to be effective. If they are not able, no worries. We have several other ways we can meet them where they are and give opportunities for healing and positive change.

Is ETT a Replacement for ADHD Medication?

First, always consult your prescribing provider before making ANY changes to your medication. We hope that you or your child get to the point where they no longer need the medication and then you can move forward with discussing options with your provider. If you are not on medication, the hope is that your treatment will be so effective that you don’t have a need for it.

Some families come to us specifically because ETT is non-pharmaceutical, and we understand and we support that under the care and guidance of the medical professional who prescribes it. Full stop.

While we’re here, one thing worth naming, because we hear it in this office more than you’d think: needing medication is not a spiritual failure. ADHD is a difference in how a brain is wired, not a shortage of discipline or faith. Plenty of faith-based families use medication. Plenty don’t. The goal is to make the next best decision to be the best version of yourself.

ETT can be explored as part of a broader plan that also includes medication, traditional counseling, behavioral strategies, accommodations at school or work, and family support. We look at the individual rather than assuming one plan fits everybody. The right approach is the one that gives that person the right mix of support to function better in real life.

What Should Families Know About the Evidence Behind ETT?

We’d rather you hear this from us than find it later and wonder why we didn’t mention it.

ETT is an emerging approach, not an established evidence-based treatment for ADHD. What exists today is clinical literature, practitioner experience, and case reports. What doesn’t exist yet is the kind of large, independent, randomized research that sits behind treatments like CBT or EMDR for the conditions they’re best known for.

That doesn’t make ETT less effective. Plenty of good clinical work runs ahead of published research. It does mean two things.

First, anyone promising you guaranteed outcomes from ETT is overselling it. Second, ETT should be chosen with realistic expectations and a clear understanding of what it is, as one option among several.

For families who want faith to be part of the process, we can counsel from a Christian worldview and integrate it at whatever level you want. For families who’d rather not include faith that’s fully respected here. Both are available. Neither is forced.

Questions Families Ask Us About ETT and ADHD

What does ETT stand for? Emotional Transformation Therapy. It’s a psychotherapy approach that pairs conversation with visual brain stimulation using light, color, and eye movement.

Is ETT safe for children and teens? ETT is delivered by trained clinicians inside a normal therapy session and is non-invasive and non-pharmaceutical. As with any approach, whether it’s appropriate for your child depends on their history and presentation, which is what the first appointment is for. It is worth noting that your child has to be able to sit and follow directions during therapy and be at an age where it makes sense to do so.

Can adults do ETT for ADHD, or is it just for kids? Adults too. Emotional dysregulation tied to ADHD is, if anything, reported at higher rates in adults than in children.

Will ETT fix my child’s ADHD? No approach cures ADHD, and we won’t tell you otherwise. The realistic goal is reducing the effects that make school, work, relationships, and daily routines harder than they need to be.

Do you offer ETT in both Oklahoma City and Edmond? We serve families at both locations and all across Oklahoma. Availability of a specific approach depends on which of our therapists you’re matched with, so ask when you call and we’ll get you to the right person.

Find Out Whether ETT Fits Your Next Step

You don’t need to understand the neuroscience before you pick up the phone. You just need to be able to describe the problem you’re trying to solve.

Maybe your child understands the material and still can’t get the assignment turned in. Maybe the emotional reactions are running your household and family counseling needs to be part of the conversation. Maybe you’re an adult who has tried every system there is and everyday life still takes more out of you than it should.

Those specifics are what we work from. If nothing changes, we can pivot to other modalities within ETT or something completely different until we find what does work for you!

We can’t promise you a specific outcome. We can promise this: we’ll listen, we’ll tell you the truth about what we think will help, and we’ll work hard alongside you.

Call us at (405) 921-7776 or visit NewVisionCounseling.org to schedule an appointment. We serve individuals, couples, kids, and families throughout Oklahoma City and Edmond.

Through consistent work with Shawn, we have deepened our understanding of each other’s perspectives and fostered a greater sense of emotional intimacy. I highly recommend New Vision Counseling and Consulting. I searched several Christian counseling services and God led us to this one. They are so caring.
How do you sum up in a few words how grateful you are. I’ll do my best. I am so very thankful that the LORD led us to New Vision Counseling and to Michael McPherson. What a Godsend he is. I was at a loss and didn’t know what the future would look like but I wanted to save my marriage. My husband and I have been married 34 years and we weren’t dealing the right way with each other. Unresolved feelings and emotions piled up over the years and we were not really communicating well at all. Michael gave us tools to be successful in our marriage but also as individuals. We learned why we are the way we are from past experiences, how to change that, forgive, and move forward better. He helped us to communicate and fight fair. What was most important to us was to have God’s word at the center and everything align with that. Michael did just that. He is so very knowledgeable and full of Godly wisdom. You can tell he loves his job and this is a calling God has given him. We are forever grateful that God led us to New Vision Counseling and Michael. I know the next 34+ years will be even better.

We reached out to New Vision after getting engaged so that we could participate in pre-marital counseling. We chose to meet with Michael McPherson, LPC and have been attending his sessions every 2 weeks for the past 4 months. Michael is patient, direct, and very knowledgeable. We are glad we chose someone who could provide us with a faith based perspective as well as someone who is not just speaking to us about being married, but experiencing a long lasting marriage himself. Trusting the advice of someone who can lead by example was a major key for us. We are extremely happy God allowed us to cross paths with New Vision Counseling and Mr. Michael McPherson, LPC. Best choice we could have made on our journey to becoming one.

New Vision Counseling and Consulting was the top-ranking provider on my “best Christian Counseling” Google search. I read every review, watched every video, and then made the call. I’m not sure why the first step, just the thought of reaching out, seemed so daunting. Just know, on the other end of the phone is someone who will make you feel comfortable and get you connected – and it just gets better from there!

Josh Rhoades came highly recommended, and he didn’t disappoint! He was so easy to talk to, showed great respect and compassion, is highly qualified, and graciously committed himself to walking me through a 3-week therapy protocol using neuroscience techniques that I can’t adequately explain. I was in a serious state of STUCK! I was overwhelmed and unable to process the simplest of tasks, unable to focus, anxious (understatement), and I had suppressed decades of unresolved guilt. The healing journey that Josh walked me through is real and impactful. At times the mental relief and emotional healing were gradual, but oftentimes immediate. Crazy. Amazing. Life changing. Josh, I cannot thank you enough!

I wholeheartedly recommend Josh and New Vision Counseling and Consulting!

Morgan not only provided such a wonderful listening ear and heart, but phenomenal bits of advice and a different (more wholistic) perspective. This is a place that helps remind you that your identity is found in Christ, and in nothing or no one else!

Alot of times, when people seek godly wisdom they are actually seeking to hear from God and just don't know how to do it. These people spend time seeking God so that they can give godly wisdom and help push you through the pain and provide a way to heal to get to the process of becoming stronger in the end. Caleb McLean is one of these God-fearing counselors that I know personally who dedicates his life to doing just that.
He is compassionate, caring, and he gives good advice by the gifts God has placed on him. He will help lead you to see what God wants you to see in yourselves push past the painful areas you didn't want to see anymore to bring closure to old wounds and become whole. If you want freedom, if you want to be challenged, if you need someone to love you like God calls us to doing, chose this group. If you believe in miracles or maybe even if you don't yet but you want to, chose this group. If this is your first wake up call or if it's your last ditch effort, chose this group. God is here and I know personally God is using counselors like Caleb McLean to build up godly men and women to feel the power of God and be guided in the ways of the Lord and to be changed forever. Change is in here so why aren't you?

Shawn called me directly and sought out a resolution with me for a recent poor experience I had. He showed genuine care and consideration over the phone, and demonstrated he truly cares about the clients that come here and wants everyone to get the help they need. That's how it needs to be in any place helping others in God. God bless.

I totally recommend Josh Rhoades. He's helped me overcome a lot of anxiety and work-related stress and the effects it's had on me this year. For any guys out there wondering if they should go to counseling, you should definitely give Josh and New Vision a try.

My husband and I just wrapped up counseling with Shawn. And if you told me 6 months ago our family would be how we are now, I would have been in total disbelief. Shawn’s approach to counseling is next level and took us to new places we never thought that we could experience freedom and he put a light on places we never knew were still dragging us down.

My husband (before counseling) had past trauma that weighed him down so heavily that his negative self talk was taking over his mental life. He was completely unable to be social anywhere, see positivity in anything, and talked with a super meek voice because he didn’t see worth in himself. We thought that “this is just his personality”, but Shawn was able to uncover the trauma that was holding him back and helped him break free of it. He now speaks with a voice to be heard and even he engages in social situations!

I went through a terrible health scare while we were going through sessions. My optometrist thought that I had a tumor or fluid build up in my skull. Shawn helped me navigate all of the feelings that I kept shoving down. On my second session of talking about this medical situation, we really got to the root of my stress and behavior in this situation and in life. I felt a ton of weight lifted off of me in that moment just by digging out every root in my heart that wasn’t welcome there. Later that day (a Thursday) I had my MRI scans and that Sunday I woke up headache/migraine free for the first time in four months. Monday I got the news that nothing was there. I truly believe that God did a healing work in that therapy session. A physical healing of my body and a spiritual healing of my mind.

Through all of this Shawn was not only there for just our counseling sessions, but when I was going through all of the medical stuff he would check in and see how everything was going. He recommended for my husband to go to a camp that absolutely played a part in changing my husband’s life. And all that I’ve shared is only the surface of all of the healing we received. I would have to write a novel for the rest, lol.

If you’re looking for healing and willing to show up and put in the work…Shawn will help you get there.

New Vision Counseling and Consulting saved my marriage as they helped and are helping me deal with my issues with depression and anxiety. I have been taught new methods of dealing with these issues and they are life saving. I have enjoyed my experience with Shawn Maguire, the best therapist I could ask for, and feel this place is a Godsend. I never thought therapy would work for me but I was wrong and wish I had come here sooner. Excited for what the future holds.
