If you are engaged, I know that its likely one of the most exciting times of your life. There is so much to be done, and so much to decide. While the wedding might be a huge priority for many, creating a marriage that is amazing and will last is most important. We want you to feel excited and confident when you say “I do!”. We walk you through critical conversations and help you identify areas of strengths and weaknesses in your relationship. Nothing can prepare you for every challenge down the road, but identifying potential pitfalls now can help you through those early years.

Here is a testimony from Hannah and Josh, who did premarital counseling with us.

They started out hopeful and excited about the opportunity to change their lives. Josh was nervous because he had only known fighting hardship and arguing in his family. Hannah was excited because she was hopeful that she could have a relationship like her grandparents. All she had known from her parents was not talking at all, and then they suddenly split up and divorced when she was in high school.

Josh initially thought people who sought help from counselors were weak and crazy. But when he did his research and read the google reviews he discovered something.  They weren’t crazy, but smart! Smart because they realized that a healthy foundation creates a great life. And through the process of counseling, he realized that he did not have to follow in the footsteps of his mom and dad who had constantly fought and argued.  His parents were just trying to figure out life together but had never been taught how.

In premarital counseling this couple started building their foundation on God. With this foundation, Josh discovered how much he had tried to please others to feel good about himself. Hannah realized she was living out of a spirit of shame. She discovered that she had never felt good enough or truly loved by her parents. But through this, she discovered that God’s love was enough. Not just in theory, but in practice.  Through premarital counseling she was able to walk out of shame and into God’s love. You are likely wondering how? A few ways were through the books she read, and doing the deeper work of knowing who she was and uncovering the issues that caused her parents divorce. Through this time she was able to give love more freely without strings attached.

Josh was able to move forward and break free from the chains of his past.  The chains of constantly blaming and attacking each other to solve problems instead of working together.  He was able to go deeper through the issues, and actually resolve them. Something his parents never did.

They were a joy to work with. And through tears and hard work, they created a marriage that was amazing. Premarital counseling is so much more than a box to check so you get a cheaper marriage license. It is an opportunity to create a foundation to change the rest of your life. It sets you up to break generational curses that were passed on to you  and opens the door to generational blessings to move forward into your future. It is the opportunity to create the marriage you dreamed of through practical steps and strategies. Strategies that not just help you build the future, but also deal with the issues causing you pain today.

It will expose and uncover areas of your life that most people get stuck in and never get out of. These are the quicksand of marriage: finances, shame-based living, only loving to get instead of living to give, and many more. These are the areas we start to address in premarital counseling.

The areas that we uncover that you have a lot of hurt, anger or pain in; we go deeper until they are resolved. We build a structure that doesn’t just last through the counseling process but is created to last a lifetime. So what are you waiting for? Take the next step. Give us the call. Reach out through email. Begin the process of changing your life by creating the marriage you’ve always wanted. This is your time. We look forward to meeting you soon.

Shawn helped me to understand and recognized how my family pathology had driven my life choices. I had to learn and understand the power of the renewal of the mind, the power of forgiveness and learning to love yourself first. Instill of looking for love on the outside, learn to appreciate yourself and develop you. Shawn, assisted me to focus, develop and go into action with the truth about me. I had to face the honest truth about me; because it began with the person you see in the mirror. Who did I! Yes, I learned to forgive myself and learned to forgive others. “If we embrace and understand the word of God we will behoove the truest, the finest, and the most precious diamond we will ever own”. S.MorrallShawn, thank you for helping me to see, understand and create the truth for my life; no matter what obstacles come my way. I have to understand it begins with me loving - who I am...”Nature Profound Miracle.” Even if I have to cry sometimes, let it out and remember to live, laugh and love with a heavy mixture of courage, discipline, perseverance, curiosity, humility, integrity, gratitude, compassion, faith, hope, and peace. I have been known Caleb for three years. He has helped us to focus on our own family by supporting healthy boundaries against our extended family. About the wounded past, it was such a journey to go back together with the Holy Sprit and deal with the wounds with his power and true forgiveness for me and others. So that we can be ourselves as God has created. My husband and I recommend him. Caleb has demonstrated sensitivity, caring, encouragement and good insights. Caleb have taken a risk to speak truths with love for us. Caleb also gives options of faith based approach or not. We always feel he respects us.

We came to New Vision to address behaviors that were causing troubling patterns in our communication. Both of us are very good communicators, but we came into a season where additional help was very much needed. During our session visits, our counselor paid close attention to nuances in how we framed each other. We came to better understand where hurts and fears were hiding, and how each can help the other be the best he/she could be. Over the next few sessions, we were guided along to address concerns from both sides and bring us closer together. The time we spent in therapy was designed to not only re-frame each person’s behavior, but also understand each person’s humanity and make needed accommodations to facilitate positive growth. Now, we are closer than ever and excited about what our future holds! One of the best investments I’ve ever made.

When the role of a counselor is discussed it seems to be repeated theme. Among these are respect, responsibility and integrity. I have found that while respect and responsibility are without doubt important, neither can stand without integrity. Shawn Maguire and his New Vision Staff works to influence change and motivates clients to challenge themselves into a deeper understanding of God's true purpose for Marriage. Let us take a moment to honor Shawn and the Maguire Family! There has been no other couple in the world that has invested in our marriage more than Shawn Maguire and his beautiful wife Tanda - and their amazing kiddos. They are phenomenal. They actually do life with us and we aren't just a number in their "to-do" list....Shawn is full of LIFE and He emanates genuine joy all the time! He is always approachable, energetic and enthusiastic. I strongly recommend Shawn Maguire. - Rashawn and Denisse Copeland

The first thing that comes to mind when I think about counseling is a story from the Bible found in Exodus 17:11-13. It speaks of this battle that took place between the Israelites and the Amalekites. The Israelites had been brought out of bondage in Egypt, and they were on a journey through the wilderness to the Promised Land when this battle takes place. Joshua was leading the troops in battle and up on a hill stood Moses with his hand raised. When his hand was up, the Israelites were winning. When his hand was down, the Amalekites would overtake them. Moses' hands became tired. You can relate, right? We all face battles. Some of us are fighting for our marriages or our children, others are fighting against addiction, depression, anxiety, or maybe anger. In the midst of these battles, sometimes we become discouraged, overwhelmed, or simply after trying to do it all on our own - we have a "Moses moment" - we get tired and battle weary. Here's the part of the story that gets me every time: Moses is standing there tired, unable to hold his hands up any longer on his own, and it looks as though they may be defeated when two individuals, Aaron and Hur, come alongside Moses and begin to support his hands as they are lifted until the battle is won. Isn't that incredible, friends? What seems impossible alone is possible when we allow others to come alongside us. We were never meant to live alone. We were never meant to face battles on our own. We need each other, not because we are weak individually but because together we are stronger, together we are encouraged, and together there is the sweet fragrance of victory on the other side of any battle we may face. This is where counseling comes in. I do not know what battle you may face personally, but I do know the battles I have faced. I have had my "Moses moments" in the midst of fighting for precious things in life and have needed the services New Vision Counseling offer. I have tried other places in the past, but there is just something different in the quality of services and the atmosphere of this place. Shawn Maguire and his team at New Vision Counseling are amazing therapists who genuinely love the Lord and want to see you succeed. They really listen, get to the heart of the issue, and formulate an individualized plan for you that works if you are willing to do your part. They cannot fight your battle for you, but they will come alongside you, pray for you, encourage you, equip you with the necessary tools, and support you through the battle as God frees you and you begin to live victoriously. Right now, the only thing standing between you and victory is your willingness to show up for battle. Make the call. Trust me, you won't regret it.
